Don’t give children over-the-counter cold or cough medicine

Since 2008 the FDA has warned parents not to give over-the-counter cold or cough medicine to children under age two because serious side effects can occur, especially if the recommended dosing is exceeded.

In response, manufacturers changed their drugs’ labels to warn that they shouldn’t be used in children under four, though this is usually in small print.

Still, more than 40 percent of parents of children under four give them cough or multi-symptom cold drugs, according to a recent national survey from the University of Michigan.

Keep in mind that there’s no evidence that cough medicines are effective in children of any age or in adults, research reviews have concluded.

I share because I care. 🙂
